Curriculum Overview

Our school is proud to offer a rigorous and engaging academic program aligned with the Common Core and California Standards-Based Instruction. Designed to challenge and support learners at every level, our curriculum focuses on core subject areas including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies—laying a strong foundation for academic success.

Academic and Social-Emotional Support

We are deeply committed to supporting the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. To help every student thrive, we offer a range of services including Special Education support, Structured English Immersion, counseling services, and targeted academic intervention programs. These supports provide personalized assistance tailored to each student’s unique needs and overall well-being.

About GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)

“SCUSD is committed to supporting gifted and high-ability students. Instructional programs for Gifted and Talented students are based on the principles that all students have potential and should have equal opportunities to develop their individual capabilities, interests and needs.

Gifted/Advanced Academic Programs serve students in grades 2-12 and offer highly challenging learning opportunities that follow the Common Core State Standards in depth, breadth, and pace of instruction designed to meet the needs of advanced learners. Adaptations are made to the curriculum in order to provide an appropriate level of challenge for gifted and advanced learners with an emphasis on critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and logical reasoning.”

Phoebe Hearst is one of four GATE Cohort models in Sacramento City Unified School District. There are two opportunities to enter the GATE program: 2nd and 4th grade. In January, students across the district are assessed in first and third grade. SCUSD uses the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Once students are identified, their families may choose to enter the lottery for a seat in the 2nd grade or 4th grade cohorts. Students in our GATE classes will be challenged by very rigorous curriculum.
